If you like older gear, then you will like this radio. I did some A/B comparison between this receiver and an Elecraft K3, and the K3 barely outdistanced this one on sensitivity. As far as clarity of sound goes, the HQ 170A sounded better than the K3! The only flaw in this radio is the plastic cover where the clock should go -- this cover looks like it has melted from some solvent. If you can find a clock cover, you can get a bargain in this radio! Here is a close up of the left side of the radio. Notice the shine on the finish!.

The inside is clean and shiny, also. Note the 6 meter module at the rear of the chassis.
The back of the radio has a tube placement chart on it, along with my finger prints on the left.
One modification which a previous owner made was to very tastefully add an internal speaker. This is very nice since you do not have to hook up an external speaker:
